Porridge & Crumpets!

Just when I thought I was all done with Winter for the moment (more on that later), I suddenly find I am posting about one of my biggest cold weather indulgences and all on account of being up at some horribly uncivilised dark morn hour…and…as happenstance would have it, stumbling into the comfort zone of the hearty dawn meal.

Tinerate, in my little ole opinion, one of the best meals of the day, especially when given the leisurely luxury of lingering longer, is the cooked breakfast.

And, just to clarify, cooked being the whole shebang. Yes!!! The full egg, bacon, pancakes, grits and fried mushrooms with wilted spinach… (well, thats how it always turns out when I play chef :) ) …spread as opposed to a bowl of cold cereal or half a tub of yoghurt eaten on the run. And also often consists of courses; most probably three. Say berries or even porridge for appetiser, followed by a cheese and ham omelette with toast and marmalade for desert. The usual beverage consisting of juice (popular choice being orange!), coffee and sometimes tea.

It’s a feast fit for a Tudor King that, luckily, is (usually) only indulged in a few times a year and more so in the chilly misting a.m. of the Winter.

The tri-serving griddled breakfast is a wonderful way to start a Sunday (especially when on holiday), and very little rivals the comforting smell of roasting coffee. Ooo, hang on …maybe cooking bacon??? …which, just as an aside is also an excellent way to raise the troops from their beds… Oh, and toasting crumpets to a sunny golden brown; they always smell good enough to visualise the butter melting through the crooks and crannies. Mmm, any others? Mmm, thinking…thinking…

Anyhoo, the breakfast bottom line for most of us during this chill, is simply a yearning for warmth, security, love and – of course – feel good vibes. It’s a time to feel nurtured during the bristling blast of the season.

Till next time.
