Don’t you ever have a moment when you feel like you can toss convention out with the recycling? Not to be completely discarded (then it would have gone with the regular rubbish ), but in to the green bin where chances are it will be picked up and used by somebody for their own enjoyment. Somebody who appreciates the tradition of convention. Not that I don’t, however, I have always been a believer in thinking outside the diamond (my favourite shape ) and a big fan of paying it forward!
So when I bowled up at HW & PD’s drinks party the other day with my new summer sipper tucked into my tote, I was oblivious to the gasps of disbelief that my beverage of choice was not a crispy clean New Zealand Sav Blanc.
Okay, to be honest, for many a hot southern season, Sauvignon Blanc was my go-to (make that me and almost the rest of the world population…well at least I’m guessing thats about how popular it was for a bit there ) but tastes and time have moved on and the new love affair blossoming from the cellar door is with Rosé. Uh huh…that sweet first blush of innocent French pink
I have always dappled with this grape but it wasn’t until I was in Boston recently and my brother-in-law, PT, and I ordered a Zinfandel (I think mainly cos it was the only wine we were vaguely familiar with ) and voila! smitten kitten
Anyhoo, it seems it is the Gen Y crowd that is responsible for popularising this wine varietal and according to winemaker, Paul Chevalier of Cateau d’Esclans in an interview with Boston Common magazine…
Thanks to a growing Millennial market, rosé has become the official sip of summer — and beyond. Rosé is different from reds and shies in the sense that it’s almost become more of a lifestyle brand.
Rosé portrays easy elegance. It is most often without pretension and reminding of gamine beauty. Like sipping on a cocktail from a crystal flute served on a monogrammed linen napkin, but the party will be at the beach and the guests barefoot
I love that rosé can complement the aesthetic of the table decor and sometimes, be the stand out decoration (note to self, if hoping to achieve this affect, be sure to pour wine first!!!)
And I don’t know about you, but I am almost thinking that, going forward, every time I do a summertime table using blue, green or yellow, I am going to have to serve rosé
Till next time.
