All That Glitters!

Right now, at this very moment in time, the party starts here! Yes! Right here in this thriving shimmering metropolis that is Adelaide!

Now those that are not from here or don’t know this city well might easily question that.  Especially so should one hail from other places that might have a superior complex attuned to that of bigger siblings ridiculing the little Free Settlers state :) So it is with a glee of proud pleasure I post today about all things glittery, exciting and Adelaide!

Firstly there is the fun and surprisingly sophisticated Fringe … (oh, and btw, a time when it’s not only the performers who get their glitzy on) … Tinerate, it’s our annual alternate festival that happens in nearly every nook and crook throughout the CBD and is even now sprawling to the burbs and beyond (we have plays being performed in a quarry even :) ) Have to say though, if this is our idea of urban sprawl, I’m all for it!

Anyhoo, throughout this time there is also an explosion of pop up bars springing to life in the most obscure of depths (and heights actually) to be imagined. Truly! think dungeons, cellars, musty old decks and other dark damp haunts most usually frequented by the multi-legged creepy crawly rodents, spirits of the night and uni students who are all for the dingier the better :) Thinking about it, I guess if including university kids in with that lot I would have to extend it to all of us as alumni of such cavernous taverns as a good majority of us, at some time, were all chasing that degree in tertiary institutions. It was almost a rite of passage during those years of enthusiastic political activity with a degrees worth of study thrown in, to inhabit the grungy and then label it as cool! Nothing wrong with that :)

Anyhoo … back on track … the best thing about the Fringe is that anything (and I do mean anything) goes!

There is a distinct amping up of the glimmers and the city shines in a strobe like light (not to be confused with the glow that can oft occur with the pr-occupancy of the weather to hit the high 30’sC: think smelly cat :) )

It’s a Festival of fun and adventure while journeying to an all that glitters world: most often in the Garden of Unearthly Delights but still to be found in the Royal Croquet Club.

And this is before we even touch on the shimmery glittery glam of the Adelaide Festival, the international academic allure of Writer’s Week or the need for speed of the Clipsal. Oy Vey … later, maybe…

Till next time.
