So what exactly is it that springs to mind when this question is posed?

Sun? Sea? Sand? Wealth? Large? Glamour? Over the top? … Mm, Hampton Style???

Well, apparently all of that, but thats not all! So, being of the curious kind, I thought I would ask around and overwhelmingly the response was ‘pretty shingled mansions set on the shores edge, surrounded by acres of rolling lawns.’ (I’m in love already! ) But, tinerate, and I might add, surprisingly, it was an architect cum design response versus being one of total money and mercenary.

Not to say though that, as expected, the verb ‘big’ in its many incarnations was not bantered around as well. “Massive houses with tennis courts, pools, guest houses and private beach front …” But I also heard the descriptive ‘luxury’ almost as much and, not surprisingly, elegance. (I mean with the money that is drawn to the little hamlets of the area, there would be something dreadfully amiss if the abodes were not all about cosmopolitan chic )

But it’s more than the picture postcard quintessential summer seaside retreat that is the root of the charm of the Hamptons, apart from being drop-dead gorgeous coastline scattered with the prettiest little towns you can imagine, it really does seem to have its own unique coveted style. Time and time again I found that all things Hamptons were coming up with an emphasis on fresh (decor or food!) and light. The brighter (be it interior or mood), the better!

Even when on vacation, in the Hamptons, it’s all about magazine-ready poise and polish with a hint of refreshment … and I’m not just talking about the celebs and high-fliers! From the dining room to the garden, it’s nothing but spectacular presentation done with the flair of a designer … and maybe it is? Mm, don’t know about that one. Anyone???

Anyhoo, it’s a wonderfully cheerful style and I know I’ll take a stunning shingle summerhouse on the east side of the island any day. How about you?
