Cinco de Mayo

Cup Cake Wishes & Birthday Dreams

Now this is what I call a cracker colour explosion :)

It’s Cinco de Mayo and I’m thinking with all the uplifting smiley cheery colour of this holiday, I should have kept on heading south last week when I was in New Orleans and half way there! (Well maybe not quite that close…never have been very good at geographical distances…but at least a whole lot nearer than New England :) )

Not quite a public vacation day, this Mexican holiday is still an absolutely HUGE celebration here in the States and, in a nutshell, its all about parties with the kids bursting the piñata and mariachi music. All of which, is most often appreciated with a margarita! (Sounds like a jolly good idea to me :) ) However, there is still remembered and included, the grown-up nod to heritage which incorporates folk dancing, extravagant parades where the Mexican culture is celebrated and, not to mention, (but I have :) )  the fab home-grown foods.

I wanted to make sure I got this right so I checked with wikipedia; their description is…

Cinco de Mayo – or the fifth of May – commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Sequin

Apparently the victory was unlikely because it was a battle between the 6,000 strong French troops against the poorly equipped 2,000 Mexican army. A real life David and Goliath story by all accounts :)

It is a day of a kaleidoscope of effervescent colour and delightful distraction which, quite naturally, extends to the celebration table. (And, just an aside, something I would have sorted weeks before I’d even thought about the bolero, cactus or guacamole!)

In the rare case that one may not want to wear their sunnies the entire day :) there is always the more traditional…but not predictable…scaled back tablescape…
