… Now I realise that some might have already heard about this, or even been lucky enough to see it, but I love the idea so much I thought it worth another mention …
In a city where it is quite the ordinary to witness the weird and wild, sometimes the wonderful is left to be a tad wanting. Well, until recently that is!
About six months ago, high end florist, Lewis Miller, began doing random pop up floral displays all across Manhattan.
These amazing flower flashes (as termed by the florist and his team) have been sighted in Central Park, hotels and even trash cans. Seriously!
(oh, and just an aside … personally, I love the idea of dressing up the rubbish bin with a fabulous floral display: I mean who would ever have thought to use a smelly old garbage receptacle as a voluminous vase? Only a creative genius … ok, total disclosure; completely fan crushing at the moment I confess )
Anyhoo, Miller and his team work under the blanket of complete mystery and secrecy, giving no indication as to where (or in fact there will be!) the next Flash Flower arrangement might be.
First revealed on his blog site, all the displays are done under the stealth of darkness, finished just before the dawn of the day with the identifying hashtag LMD x NYC sprayed by each installation. Apparently it’s a chalk spray paint that washes away with the rain and is their “way of saying #LMDWasHere.”
…These flashes are so gratifying and rewarding on many levels. There is something sort of ‘Banksy-esque’ about what we do, which is fun and exciting!
In articles for both Vogue and Cosmopolitan, Miller admits that he can’t see the flower flashes stopping anytime soon (phew! ) and that he would like to see the idea flourish in the future to include other cities (brilliant idea if you ask me )
Tinerate, be sure to read all about this flower fabulousness on his blog, lewismillerdesign.com/flowers-for-the-people. I am just giddy with the intoxicating romance of the moments chance being offered to enjoy some of the simpler but more stunning aspects of our glorious world, even in the depths of the urban jungle. In the words of the artist himself …
Who doesn’t love to get flowers? They are such a luxury, and New York City is a very gritty, fast-paced town. if we can bring nature – something wild and sumptuous – to New Yorkers and make them smile, the way people smile when they witness a random act of kindness, than that is a great thing. That is my goal. It’s a really simple vision but powerful, I think, to try to create an emotional response through flowers.
I hope he keeps going forever
Till next time.
