Grand Opulence!

Confession Time :)

I have recently been totally fascinated by all things opulent and lavish and, believe it or not, there is actually some thought process behind this preoccupation and it’s not just a complete self-absorbent curiosity!

You see, I received a FB ping from my good Boston friend, LM, with a very excited note bursting with the news that she was flying Suite Class.

In 2008,  Singapore Airlines introduced their Suites Class, the most luxurious class of flying that is commercially available.

The Suites were exclusive to their flagship Airbus A380, and they go beyond flat beds by offering enclosed private cabins with sliding doors that cocoon you in your own little lap of luxury.

Now I do know that this style of flying is no longer considered the best that is out there (more on that later) but it’s still not a shabby option. This whole idea of having one’s own room (not to mention bathroom) is just a complete dream to any of us who spend considerable time in the air and, without a doubt, adds a whole new dimension to the word luxury.  I think, quite possibly, this might even be referred to as lap of luxury :)

Tinerate, apparently this land of milk and honey experience began even before she left her hotel room (I didn’t ask where she was staying!) when the airline sent a valet for her luggage prior to escorting her to the company’s waiting limousine in which she was driven by her own chauffeur to the airport. At the terminal she was set down (as opposed to dropped off I’m told) at the personal door for guests turning left on boarding the plane.

There was no check in. No signage. Just a uniformed white gloved gentleman holding open the glass door, inviting LM (by name :) ) entry. Treated with the complete VIP experience, LM was escorted to the Private Room, a retreat especially for the comfort of guests who are travelling in this class which, BTW, is billed as being above First Class.

In the privacy of this exclusive oasis, LM tells me she was completely pampered and indulged with her every last whimsical desire apparently doable. Care for a champagne? Yes please! Would you like a lobster appetiser with that? Mm, Okay! And does Ma’am feel like a side serving of caviar? Why yes, I think Ma’am can cope with that!

Too much fun if you ask me :)

Anyhoo, from all accounts, this was merely a prelude to the experience of the actual in-service flight and facilities where she was wined, dined and attended to within an inch of all expectations. Sounds seriously sybaritic :)

However, as posh as this all appears, apparently there is a new kid on the block (that LM is now angling to fly) which blows anything else right out of the water. The Residence on Etihad Airlines; a three roomed suite with your own separate bedroom, bathroom and butler. Mmm, thinking the bar might have just got raised to a whole new level :)

Till next time.
