Ring in the Retro!

I just heard a landline ring.

WOW! How long is it since I’ve heard that??? The old familiar Briing BriingBriing Briing. Or just one very lazy laid back old Briiiiing like in the States? You know the kind of ring that says, ‘I’m giving you but one chance to be blessed with my conversation but I sure aint got all day so’s you’d better bloody well put down that neurological study (I thought I’d pretend to be in medicine for a bit :) ) and converse with me NOW!’ Mmm, okay, maybe I’m thinking that I am most probably the only little old soul (who is not even Southern, even when in the US!) who thinks like that? Good thing I know how to entertain myself right :)

Anyhoo, this landline ringing got me a thinking … Tell me, does anyone remember those old party lines? The phones with the handles on them? And then there was the ‘modern’ rotary … :)

But the party lines … The ones where there would be about five or six (maybe more; have never worked for Telecom :) ) houses on the same line and they were all given a different ring code. Like short short long. Or short short short. Long short long. Everything stopped so the ring could be heard and one would know if the call was for them. Ingenious morse code for the home I guess.

Well I gots to a thinking (OMG, I am soo turning Southern for this post :) ) that woudn’t it be great if we re-introduced the nostalgic party line but this time we do it with a cocktail hour. Yes! Soo, at 5.00pm (the girls need time to chat before the boys get home :) ) everyone on the same line serves themselves up a fabulous drink, dials in, kicks back and chats from home. No drink driving. No hassles. And still able to catch up with friends!

What do you think? Fabulous idea or best left in the archives?

Till next time.
